Carolyn is aware that, by training and instinct, she is a designer rather than an expressive artist. She says ''I make sense of my work by thinking of it as illustrative of ideas that I am interested in, ideas about the way that places become special and meaningful.'' |

Carolyn feels that drawing and painting allow her to explore this in a way that words and concepts do not. She is excited by the way each brick, tile, fence post and oil drum has a history that taps into the complex industrial and rural past of the area and its population. For Carolyn, colour and form encode some of that history. |

Although Carolyn is conscious that she does not want to paint pretty images, ''of course, the place, its past, and the lives that made it, are stunning in their beauty and power.'' |

In 2005 Carolyn moved to the Orkney Islands, an opportunity to develop further her particular understanding of community and landscape. |
