The beauty of the North Yorkshire Moors never fails to inspire John, and his love of nature, the land and seascapes is often reflected in the decoration of his pots. John established Sneaton Pottery in 1965, after graduating from Scarborough Art School and Hornsey London College of Art.
He continues to experiment with new ideas, enjoying the challenge of both the form of the pot and the method of decoration. Most of John's pots are thrown, for which he is renowned, but he also enjoys the freedom and informality of hand building.
John uses the technique of etching through the glaze when first applied to the surface of the pots, finding in nature an endless source of design ideas and textures. He aims to interpret directly on to pots the moorland and coastal scenes that he sees around him. In another mood, the decoration is of a geometric design, often moving towards the abstract.
John enjoys finding new ways and combinations of using his stock-in-trade glazes to produce a range of different ceramic effects.''I am delighted to discover that, with the rustic glazes I have used for so long, I can achieve a close match to the colours and textures of the natural world that is the inspiration of much of my work.''
