Sue has always enjoyed drawing as a means of observing the human form and face. Recently, she has been developing a new body of work which is high fired stoneware. In this work she tries to capture the spontaneity and energy of a line drawing by drawing and carving directly into the clay.
Sue's striking black-and-white 'mask' heads reflect both the primitive and the sophisticated. Tim Andrews, internationally renowned ceramicist, in his book Raku refers to them as "responses to the expression of self-awareness found universally throughout all cultures."
"It is man who is most fascinated by man. Since we are puzzled by our own being we are most preoccupied by ourselves. Our self-reflection, which we try to penetrate, understand and love, never quite leaves us. This is why both the primitive man, and the child of the most sophisticated society, attempt instinctively to recreate their own image on a wall, or a piece of paper, in the sand or snow."
Sue builds each piece using slabs of Ashraf Hanna clay (a professional clay body made by Scarva). The decoration is achieved by subjecting the finished piece to a variety of smoke firing techniques.
