The work of Alan Richardson can be found at www.turnstonegallery.net
Alan began carving in wood as a teenager, but did not start to pursue a career in sculpture until his late forties when he moved from Manchester to North Yorkshire.
''My work is mainly figurative and my inspiration comes mostly from the human form and its relation to the environment and nature. I aim to allow the material to develop its own expression and therefore each piece is totally individual.''
Wood often appeals to artists who feel a close affinity with nature and organic growth. Many natural factors are compressed within its fibres and year-rings, the changing seasons, wind, sun and rain, birth and death.
From another perspective, wood often contains symbolic values of ancient origin. Certain groves and single trees were once the habitation of the gods and eventually became became objects of worship and reverence. A tree trunk, a twisted root, or a broken branch assumed mysterious importance and became carriers of supernatural powers.
Alan carves in wood and local sandstone, and his sculptures are featured in collections nationwide. He will undertake commissions on an occasional basis.
