The work of Fran Tristram can be found at www.turnstonegallery.net Fran established Lady Bay Pottery in the Nottingham suburb of West Bridgford in 1993, currently she produces single fired domestic stoneware (gas reduction to 1300 degrees centigrade). A new range of low fired, hand burnished, sawdust fired pots was launched in September 2006 - refer to the 'Natural Companions' Exhibition. Her domestic range is largely wheel thrown but includes several hand-built pieces. Her current glaze palette is drawn from the idyllic coastal landscapes of my Irish childhood warm earthy colours, inspired by the action of weather on surface. While I love working in stoneware for its unashamedly earthy sense of itself I also admire the refinement of porcelain, and seek to achieve something of that refinement in my handling of the stoneware clay on the wheel. The constant stretching to master the skills of making is a great springboard to creativity. Function is an important aspect of my work and I enjoy and celebrate the domestic in terms both of use, context and scale the domestic is the central core of everyday life and as such can speak directly and universally to all. Fran regularly shows and demonstrates at events around the country, and exhibits at several UK galleries including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Islington Business Design Centre, the Commonwealth Institute, Rufford Craft Centre and Contemporary Ceramics.
