Robert began painting in the early 1970’s, working primarily in oils and watercolour.
He turned professional in 1992, moving to Sandsend with his wife Liz, where they ran a small ‘Bed and Breakfast’ and Robert painted and tutored painting holidays. Robert has since established his studio in Sleights but he has continued to teach, holding regular evening classes and weekend workshops during the summer months. He is also a regular demonstrator for Art Societies countrywide. His love of painting coastal scenery, small boats, beaches and harbour scenes led to his election of membership of the ‘Royal Society of Marine Artists’ in 1997. He is currently the Society Archivist, and enjoys the post very much.
The inspiration for Robert’s paintings always comes from his immediate reaction to the light and atmosphere in the subject. Composition, tone, colour, are always important, but the initial impact of how the subject is lit is his inspiration.

Many of Robert’s small oils are painted on site. He finds that oil allows him more freedom when working quickly, in less than ideal weather conditions, as he attempts to catch the mood and atmosphere in the subject. The majority of his watercolours are studio works, developed mainly from small sketches and photographs, which serve only as an ‘aide-mémoire’
The exhibition includes paintings of the North East Coast, and other locations in England, together with recollections of some of his favourite locations abroad.
Robert hopes that these recent works reflect his love of painting in a traditional style, both at ‘Home and Abroad’. |
