Robert paints in a traditional style, but his inspiration always comes from his immediate reaction to the light and atmosphere in the subject. His passion for the sea and his interpretation of coastal scenery, beaches and harbour scenes led to his election of membership to the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1997.
The Society was founded in 1939 and is widely recognised for being the focal point for much of Britain's finest marine art, dedicated to celebrating the sea in all its aspects and has many links with the maritime world including the National Maritime Museum, The Royal Navy and the RNLI. Its members hold an annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London every October, and many members are active in teaching, lecturing, and demonstrating their work.
Robert moved to the Yorkshire Coast and turned professional in the early 1990’s; he has since established his studio in Sleights and continues to teach, holding evening classes, weekend workshops and demonstrations for Art Societies countrywide.
