David was born in Knaresborough and studied painting and printmaking at Harrogate College of Art. After a compulsory two-year break for National Service, he continued his studies in painting and sculpture at the Slade School, University College, London from 1959 to 1961.
Whilst pursuing his own painting practice, David began teaching at Bradford College of Art and Harrogate College of Art. His teaching included responsibility for printmaking and this medium became of special interest to him as an artist.
His paintings and prints are based on observation, landscape and natural form providing the subject matter. He has a long standing attachment to the North East coast, often working on the spot and then developing ideas further in his Harrogate studio.
He has exhibited in many mixed shows including the Royal West of England Academy, The Manchester Academy of Fine Art and The Mall Galleries, London. Most recent exhibitions include Discerning Eye, Mall Galleries, One Man Show 2006, Bianco Nero, Stokesley, 2003 Open Exhibition, R.W.A. Bristol.
