Twelve years ago Peter Sarginson retired from being Principal of West Dean College in Sussex to give more of his time to painting.

He returned to his northern roots and his love of the sea.

Delighting in the patterns of the waves and the ripples of the shore, the reflections of the sky on water and the wet beach, the clarity of the light and the sense of infinite distance, of a timeless eternity.

Severely simplified, reduced in some cases to bands of colour broken by pattern and texture, in what he sometimes refers to as the 'calligraphy of the beach', his paintings evoke a foamy dampness of the shorelines and at the same time suggest vast distances beyond far horizons.
